Americanization of the world
I truly saw the "Americanization" of the world last night. It was Jill's birthday on Wednesday, so last night she invited me along with her and two of her friends to go out to eat. Driving into the city shows the stark contrast between the American companies that are quickly spreading throughout the world, like McDonalds and T-Mobile, sitting right next to the traditional European and Hungarian culture. It is so interesting to see. We were planning on going to eat at a Mexican restaurant that turned out to be under remodeling, so we ended up going to the "West end shopping center", no joke that is the name, and eating at a TGI-Fridays. It was really strange eating somewhere that is totally American, somewhere I don't even usually eat at in the US in a foreign country halfway around the world. The funniest thing was that even though this mall was very American style with escalators and stores everywhere, it was all in Hungarian, with stores that appeal to Hungarian people and so many key elements of Hungarian culture intermixed. I guess this shows two things, the speed at which American things are entering other countries and cultures, and how there is still an element of Hungarianess or culture that is kept despite this Americanization. Keep praying for me everyone!!! I am finally sleeping well, which is a huge answer to prayer, but I am constantly in need of prayer and uplifting during my time here, it is so different than the States. Miss you all tons!

Oh, you are so right about the impact of the American culture. Sometimes I think it's really tragic, ... but then you see other cultures make their own adaptations of things so that you get some sort of "blended and homogenized" version, ... that's neither American or Hungarian, ... or whatever culture you're in.
The important thing that I need to keep remembering is that as a follower of Jesus, I need to keep somewhat of an "other culture" perspective, ... and understand the tension that each of our lives have because we have chosen to submit to a different king, whose kingdom is not of this world.
You are learning and seeing so much, Abi, ... and we are so thankful to God for this experience. We're praying for you and know that much good will come from your time in Budapest. Enjoy the tension, ... and go out for coffee!!
Love ya,
Daddy
Abi, your experiences are giving you such a great insight into a span of the world that many people are never privileged to have. We have no doubt that the Lord is leading you and showing you what He wants you to do. Yes, the Americanization of the world is overwhelming. We still need to remember that there is a culture in that country that cannot and should not be interrupted. There is a pride among the people that others need to respect. God is everywhere and He will continue to bless all of us. Have fun, enjoy yourself, and don't let those boys play rough and tough football.
We love you. God's blessings to you.

So glad you are doing so well, It has been great to hear how your time is going. I have been praying for you in between phone calls and the mountain of work your Dad has given me. It does seem strange to eat in a U.S. restaurant in another place it is just a little bit different, like the ketchup just isn't the same. I am sure you are out seeing things over the weekend, it is frigid here in the midwest enjoy the balmy weather there in Hungary. L lwis
